When the Del Bello Lakes playground opened in 2020, it included an inclusive adaptations for handicapped accessibility. Developers and planners worked with the City of Manvel on this feature and Manvel Mayor Debra Davison brought in an expert opinion to help.
Reaghan Valazquez is now a senior at Manvel High School, but when she was a fifth grader at EC Mason Elementary School, she had to face accessibility obstacles at school. Born with Spina Bifida, a birth defect that occurs when the spin and spinal cord don't form properly, Reagan requires use of a walker to get around. One day while other student were enjoying recess, Reaghan and her teacher decided to write a letter to the school principal in hopes of adding an accessible ramp leading to the playground area. Within two days of writing the letter, the sidewalk ramp was installed.
Reaghan has continued to raise awareness for Spina Bifida. She organized the Yellow Out campaign, where she produces shirts, bracelets and other merchandise. While a seventh graders at Manvel Junior High, Reaghan organized the first official Yellow Out day on World Spina Bifida Day, October 25th.
Mayor Davison knew about Reaghan's story and contacted her to assist with input for the design of the new inclusive playground at Del Bello Lakes. "I was so excited to be able to voice my opinion and help others facing the same challenges I've faced throughout my life. This playground will be a wonderful addition to the community and can't wait until it's opening in August 2020," Reaghan said on the Manvel ISD website.
Reaghan plans to attend collect and study music and hopes to pursue a career in music performance.
